The Trains of California

The trains of California lead to paradise. When the Santa Fe railroad reached Los Angeles, the exodus began, to the land of lemon trees, beaches, and eternal spring and youth.

We love going to Santa Barbara and Carpinteria by train from Oakland. You spend nine hours on the train, with breakfast, lunch and dinner. You pass the hills and the bird sanctuaries, the rivers and the beaches. In Santa Barbara, the ocean and the mountains come together. The rail tracks are stretching to the horizon, to the blue mountains of promise, of summer.

Mountains on one side, and the ocean on the other.
